Abstract
An undergraduate experiment focusing on the optical properties of liquid crystals (LC) is designed to complement an advanced course on Optoelectronics taught at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the National University of Singapore. The objectives of the experiment are to i) provide a hands-on experience of setting up an optical source-modulator-detector system, ii) present a real-life example of Jones matrix analysis, iii) establish a relationship between the molecular properties of an LC medium and the optical behavior of light passing through it and hence iv) show the link between LC material properties and their application in displays and optical modulators.
