Abstract
Analysis of power distribution in an erbium doped power amplifier (EDFA) typically proceeds from two sets of equations. The first is a set of coupled equations, based on particle number densities, that relates energy level populations and their time derivatives to power, lifetimes, and certain physical parameters of the system. The second set of equation expresses the spatial evolution of the three types of power in an EDFA (pump, signal, and amplified spontaneous emission, or ASE) via the number densities and physical parameters [1].
