Scalar Approximation to Describe Depolarized Light: Equation for Refraction, when Impedance is Constant

Abstract

Scalar wave equation is derived, which describes refraction due to propagation speed inhomogeneities in assumption of constant impedance Z. This Z-Helmholtz equation yields surprisingly good description of situations with depolarized light sources and unpolarized detectors.
