Abstract

The current operational MODIS aerosol retrieval is susceptible to thin cirrus over-screening due to the use of 1.38μm channel that misidentify thin cirrus over dry and high surface albedo regions. A joint use of the reflectance ratio between 1.38μm and 0.66μm (RR1.38/0.66) and the brightness temperature difference between 11μm and 12μm (BTD11-12) are discussed to improve the thin cirrus screening scheme in the aerosol retrieval.
