Abstract

The oldest optical instrument is the gnomen¹; a shadow casting rod used by the ancient Greeks to keep time. Depending on the position of the sun in the sky, the shadow has a unique length which is marked out on a horizontal surface. A sundial consists of a gnomen and graduated markings on a horizontal plane.
