Abstract
An electro-optic Mach-Zehnder Ti-LiNbO3 waveguide interferometer is by far the most popular optical intensity modulator. In this paper, we show that the modulation depth characteristics of the device is degraded when there is optical coupling between the two interferometer arms. A novel design of M-Z interferometer having a small interarm spacing is described. High modulation depth is achieved by the use of a multi-section electrode structure with alternating applied voltage polarities.
