Abstract

Coherent interaction of guided modes in materials exhibiting an intensity dependent refractive index offers the potential for power or phase controlled all-optical switching. During the last few years a relative large number of such nonlinear devices have been proposed and implemented. Promising switching schemes may utilize nonlinear directional couplers1, polarization conversion (arising from spatial instability) in fibers2, distributed feedback gratings3, soliton switches4, etc...
