Abstract

Practical directional couplers have nonparallel waveguide regions where significant power transfer occurs. Such power transfer is generally calculated by numerical integration 1. We report on a simplified method using a multiplicative factor which depends on the generic waveguide path. Use of this method allows rapid determination of the power transfer in nonparallel waveguide regions, which facilitates directional coupler design.
