Abstract
The conventional approach to the design of a telescope assumes it is comprised of an objective and an eyepiece whose focal lengths are selected to provide the required magnification and package size. This approach inevitably leads to a system with a significant amount of Petzval curvature which can only be reduced by designing special objectives and/or eyepieces with individually reduced Petzval curvature.
