Abstract
We have demonstrated bistable optical switching by using the creation and destruction of bubbles produced through the electrolytic dissociation of water into hydrogen or oxygen. So long as the bubbles do not merge, they persist nearly indefinitely, but if the bubbles are permitted to merge in the presence of a catalyst, the oxygen and hydrogen recombine rapidly, destroying the bubble.
