Abstract

The electromagnetic field of the fundamental mode propagating in a waveguide whose core has a large nonlinear coefficient may be significantly distorted from that of the corresponding linear mode. In the special case of a step-index, planar waveguide this field can be described in terms of elliptic functions,1 but for more general refractive-index profiles numerical solutions are required.
