Abstract
All-fiber components associated with passive and active optical functions have recently received considerable attention in the field of lightwave technology, including optical fiber communication and optical fiber sensing. Among various components, a fiber-optic phase modulator acts on the phase of optical fields which propagate within the core of fiber. We have proposed coating single-mode fibers with a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride (73 mol%) and trifluoroethylene (27 mol%)1. The fiber consisted of an 80 μm cladding diamter and a gold-nickel thin-film coating was overcoated with a 80 μm thickness of VDF/TrFE copolymer radially poled. A thin metallic layer of aluminum was then vacuum-evaporated over the outside of the copolymer, and the fiber equipped with inner and outer electrodes was set on a glass-epoxy substrate to test as an all-fiber phase modulator.
