Abstract
We have demonstrated three types of all-optical wavelength converters using nonlinear optical effects in silicon wire waveguides. One is a coherent type based on four-wave mixing. The other two are optical switch types utilizing either cross-absorption modulation and the optical Kerr effect. All converters use just a simple silicon wire waveguide and the optical peak power normally employed in telecommunications systems.
