Abstract
We present a simple model which describes development of coherence in low-gain free-electron laser systems having planar geometry. The treatment is based on the Maxwell and pendulum equations, with the incoherent or spontaneous emission originating in the distribution of incoming electrons, in the manner of shot noise. A simple analytic expression is obtained relating the number of transits required within the laser cavity for the radiation to become coherent with the small-signal gain for the system.
