Abstract
Some of the largest optical nonlinearities in nature have been observed in direct-gap semicondoctors exhibiting excitonic effects.1 However, to interpret correctly any nonlinear measurements done near the band gap, a good understanding of the linear properties of the semiconductor is required. We report here an accurate measurement done at cryogenic temperature of both the linear and nonlinear transmission characteristics of a very high-quality optical platelet of CdS.
