Abstract
Optical Stark effect of excitons has recently been observed in multiple quantum wells of GaAs-AlGaAsA1,2,3 An instantaneous high energy shift of the exciton resonance was seen with nonresonant excitation by short optical pulses. The light beam was tuned in the transparency region of the medium where the "real" electron-hole generation is not appreciable. The light field of the pump beam affects the exciton, shifting it to the higher energies with instantaneous response times.
