Abstract

Recent renewed interest in finding the correct quantum mechanical description of the phase of light has stimulated a number of different proposals. Because these descriptions have appropriate properties in the classical limit, it is necessary to establish at least one quantum mechanical property of phase to test them. Which classical property of phase can be reliably extended to the quantum regime?
