Abstract
The analysis of actively modelocked laser operation has generally been restricted to situations where (a) the modulation of cavity loss is approximately sinusoidal in time, and (b) the modulation is synchronous with the pulse round-trip time in the cavity. Under such assumptions solutions for the resulting pulse envelope have been found which are chirped gaussian or hyperbolic secant functions, depending on the sign of dispersion and amount of self phase modulation influencing pulse propagation in the cavity. [1,2,3] It has also been shown that detuning of the modulator drive frequency may cause chirped pulse generation, even in the absence of chromatic dispersion and nonlinearity.[4,5]
