Abstract
The fabrication of in-fiber modulators with a second-order nonlinearity is investigated. A permanent strong electric field is recorded in fiber segments which gives them the linear electrooptic effect. Interferometry is used to transform phase- into intensity modulation. Vπ in the 100-V range is obtained, with an electrical bandwidth of tens of MHz. Various applications in photonics can then be exploited. Ways of improving the devices are discussed.
