Abstract
Cholesteric Liquid Crystals (CLCs) show a selective reflection for circularly polarized light. Radiation with different polarization or wavelength is nearly fully transmitted. Furthermore, liquid crystals show strong optical nonlinearities due to electronic effects [1] or reorientation of the anisotropic molecules [2]. In cholesteric liquid crystals transverse non-linear optical effects like retro-self-focusing and a pinholing effect were demonstrated with a cw-Nd:YAG-laser[3,4].
