Abstract
Localized structures have been observed, especially in optics, both in the longitudinal [1] and in the transverse [2] direction of the propagation, appearing as optical intensity pulses. Dispersion or diffraction act respectively for the spatial coupling. In both cases the nonlinear medium must be large enough in order to accomodate solutions which are not defined by boundary conditions but instead by the light/matter interaction taking place in the bulk of the material. In this contribution we prepare a low dimensional system (i.e. without any spatial extension), with the desired phase space topology, in a regime called excitable (due to its all-or-nothing response to an external stimulus). Using the profound analogy between spatially extended systems and delayed ones, we add a delayed retro-action, acting as a spatial degree of freedom and making possible the storage and the manipulation of the information. We demonstrate the existence of temporal localized structures which are fundamentally phase objects, whose properties depend on the underlying excitable system.
