Abstract
We propose a novel optical-amplifier-based PON repeater consisting of a gain-clamped praseodymium-doped fiber amplifier (PDFA) and a Thulium-doped fiber amplifier (TDFA) that improves the attenuation range of PON systems regardless of transmission bit-rate and/or protocol. We successfully demonstrate, for the first time, a 60 km optically-amplified PON repeatered transmission experiment using a commercial 1.24 Gbit/s upstream and 2.5 Gbit/s PON system using the proposed optical-amplifier-based PON repeater and a 128× splitter.
