Abstract
Large fusion lasers propagate high intensity beams over long distances in air. The propagation of high intensity beams through long air paths has also been proposed for other purposes. Averbakh et al.1 have analyzed stimulated Raman processes in air and have shown that for pressures below ~2 atm the process of lowest threshold is stimulated rotational Raman scattering in nitrogen.
