Abstract
An improved coupled-mode theory derived from a generalized reciprocity theorem is employed to study optical and optoelectronic devices. Using an exact analytical relation between the coupling coefficients of two general parallel waveguides and a vector formulation of the coupled-mode theory, we study the electrooptical effects for two-and three-coupled waveguide systems.1 Theoretical investigations on the validity of the coupled-mode theory have been performed. The field profiles for two coupled waveguides that are separated by a distance t and that are merged to one waveguide with a zero spacing have all been calculated. The results of the coupled-mode theory are presented and compared with those from the direct numerical solutions.
