Abstract
Reflectance functions occurring in practice are usually smooth. We define as a measure of the smoothness of a reflectance function the square of its derivative integrated over the entire visual range. The problem: to determine for given tristimulus values the smoothest reflectance function in the sense above has sixteen types of solution related to the four types of optimal color in a way to be explained.
