Abstract

The principal advantage of gradient index optics is the simplification of optics systems by the elimination of one or two lenses in a multilens system. This results in reduced cost, size, and weight without a sacrifice in performance. This tutorial begins with an understanding of the basics of gradient index materials, both in the optical regime and in other areas of physics. Lens design of axial, radial, and spherical gradient materials is discussed. The problems of materials measurements are described, with particular emphasis on materials and the limits of gradient index design in terms of current and future materials. Finally, the currently existing systems are required.
