Abstract
Luminescence research of wide bandgap II-VI compounds such as ZnS, ZnSe, and CdS has a long history tracing back to the nineteenth century. The mechanism of luminescence of ZnS phosphors was elucidated in the late 1960s after much effort over a long period. The importance of ZnS phosphors as TV phosphors is rising more and more toward the realization of high definition TV. Recently the demand to obtain light emitting diodes and semiconductor lasers operating in the short-wavelength visible region has rapidly increased.
