Prescription for beam design: optimizing power transport to a target

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Recent investigations into novel beam and pulse shapes lead one to the general question: For a specified target and allowed beam aperture, what field distribution across the aperture produces the maximum power transport to the target? We show that in general this question can be unambiguously answered by finding the eigenfunction associated with the largest eigenvalue of a Hermitian operator.
