Abstract
Recently, a number of papers treated the so-called nondiffracting beams that exhibit an extended region of confinement. Axicons, when illuminated by uniform or Gaussian beams, generate distributions approaching this definition. Analysis of longitudinal and lateral variations of such beams along their propagating direction is presented. It is shown that some approximate results can be obtained by using geometric optics formalism or simplified integration techniques. Comparison with exact Fresnel integration results identify the usefulness of such approximations.
