XPS and UPS investigation of Ag-Mg alloys

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

We describe x-ray and UV photoemission measurements of the valence bands and core level shifts in Ag3Mg and in AgMg (CsCl structure), and the results are compared with pure Ag. As far as we are aware, this is the first report of such an investigation on Ag3Mg alloys. We find that the valence bandwidths of alloys are narrower than that of pure Ag. As part of the study, we calculated the density of states and band structure of Ag3Mg (L12 structure) and AgMg (CsC1 structure) using the SCF-LMTO-ASA method. The calculations are in general agreement with the measurements.
