Erasable lenses

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

A new type of planar lens for single-mode integrated optics is presented. The lens can be recorded, erased, and reprogrammed within milliseconds, providing a novel all-optic reconfigurable interconnect architecture. The upper cladding of the photosensitive waveguide is based on POCs highly efficient dye photopolymer. This cladding is the core of the system. The cladding refractive index is locally increased by argon laser exposure, creating the respective increase in the waveguide’s effective refractive index. By changing the beam’s polarization, the cladding index can be returned to its beginning state.
