Abstract
The use of infrared lasers and interstitially placed optical fibers for in situ thermal destruction of tissue through induction of coagulative necrosis (50-80% temperature range, without ablation) is being investigated for a number of potential clinical applications: e.g. inoperable malignant tumors such as in the brain, liver and g.i. tract, benign prostate hypertrophy.
