New Media Development at Burroughs: Material and Coating

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

This paper is directed to one of the various optical media investigations currently being conducted by Burroughs. For this particular investigation, a conventional "trilayer" structure is employed with a thin film metal absorber layer which can be controlled in such a way that the structure is easily changed by low power laser heating. The optical transition of this metal film occurs at a temperature well below its bulk melting point. Judged from threshold recording power and change in reflectivity, the media has a sensitivity which is much better than Te. This optical transition is further enhanced by using an organic film for a spacer layer. Our media also has a high sensitivity with 7 mil overcoat.
