Abstract
Semiconductor diode lasers suitable for optical recording must satisfy a variety of stringent requirements: reliable operation in a fundamental spatial mode at 30 to 60 mW peak power and 50% duty cycle; beam direction independent of drive level and/or duty cycle; and a virtually stigmatic beam. We present and discuss here the major types of single-mode diode lasers suitable for optical recording.
