Abstract
Tremendous research and development efforts on optical fiber transmission systems have been made throughout the world, and optical fiber transmission systems have been put into commercial service. For the next stage, an optical switching system, which can directly exchange an optical signal without electrooptical (E/O) and optoelectronic (O/E) conversion, is expected to be realized for various uses, such as an optical toll/central office, an optical PABX, and an optical toll/central office, an optical PABX, and an optical local area network. We studied optical switching systems and chose a time-division digital switching using optical fiber delay lines and optical switch matrices from today's optical device technology standpoint.
