Abstract
Most existing single-mode fiber directional couplers are four-port devices that operate via the evanescent field coupling that occurs if two fiber cores are physically close to each other. This proximity can be achieved by etching1 or polishing2 a portion of the fiber cladding. A single-mode fiber multiterminal directional coupler was first realized using an encapsulated etching technique.3 In this presentation, we describe a new multiterminal coupler4 based on the polishing technique, which uses arrays of silicon V-grooves to precisely align and position a series of single-mode fiber taps.
