Abstract
It is expected that optical switches will come to be one of the key components for advanced optical fiber communication systems. Thus much effort has been devoted to developing many such optical switches. In particular, mechanical switches, for example, moving fiber types1 and moving beam types,2 have been extensively looked at because of their low insertion loss and low cross talk. However, such switches reported on so far have not always been sufficient in terms of size and driving power for practical use. Accordingly, this paper first describes a structure and operating principle for a newly designed small-sized low-power optical switch employing a magnetic alloy coated fiber. It then presents experimental results that show satisfactory practical performance.
