Abstract
Core monitor alignment using the focusing method1 is very useful for single-mode-fiber splicing in cases where power monitoring cannot be used, such as the submarine optical transmission system2 final splicing. In this paper, the apparatus for this method is described, and suitable geometrical allocation of optical elements and accuracy in use are discussed. The apparatus for this method consists of a preform core alignment in two directions by monitoring the fiber images magnified by the lens and TV camera. Generally speaking, it is difficult to measure exactly the diameter of a small object such as an optical fiber core with this technique. However, it is easy to measure the core center accurately, because fibers are almost symmetrical. Thus this technique is useful for core alignment. The apparatus is shown in Fig. 1.
