Abstract

The 4ESS Digital Toll Switching System has 16,384-Mbit/sec coaxial cable data links interconnecting various units, and these were experimentally replaced by fiber-optic links in 1977-78. This work, which produced a high-performance link with the potential for low cost, provided information needed to add fiber-optic links to the next generation of switching equipment.
