Abstract
Monomode fibers appear to have simpler structures than multimode, since there are fewer available variable parameters. For example, the field of the lowest order mode is near-Gaussian in form; knowledge of the width of this and of the associated propagation constant would appear to define most of the fiber’s properties leaving only loss. In fact, however, a number of fiber characteristics of particular interest, for example, dispersion and bend/ microbend loss, are not adequately defined by the above. This Is because these are weak effects in the sense that, for example, the shift in propagation constant with wavelength is small compared with the propagation constant itself, or the bend loss is small on an axial scale defined by the inverse propagation constant
