Abstract
Over the last several years, multimode (MM) fiber has been gradually displaced from telcom laser based, long-distance applications by single mode (SM) fibers. Today, MM fibers are used mainly in local area network (LAN) applications, where typically, the distances are much shorter, many connectors are required and the light source is a light-emitting diode (LED). Fiber designs for LAN's are characterized by large numerical aperture (NA), moderate core size and moderate bandwidth (BW). It is also important that the BW of Installed cable lengths cut from factory lengths be predictable and that the chromatic dispersion be well characterized.
