Abstract
Future long-haul fiber-optic communication networks are likely to use heterodyne detection techniques to realize a sensitivity improvement over present direct detection methods. Frequency shift eying (FSK) appears to be a particularly attractive modulation technique for such systems because of its ease of implementation relative to phase shift keying and its superior performance relative to amplitude shift keying.
