Abstract
The promise of virtually unlimited bandwidth and upgrade capability makes it increasingly attractive to bring single-mode fiber directly to subscribers. However, the successful introduction of such a fiber-based broadband integrated-services digital network (B-ISDN)1 by the Bell Operating Companies depends critically on the availability of very low-cost transmission equipment.2
