Abstract
Figure 1 demonstrates static fatigue test results for normal and abraded fiber samples. Using equations in Table 1, the following conclusions have been drawn: (1) As predicted from Eqs. (1), (3), and (5), both η and ε values increase due to abrasion. Accordingly, the effect of abrasion on the expected lifetime reduces toward lower stress levels. (2) Static and dynamic fatigue test results are equivalent when Inσs ≈ Inσd. Therefore, a dynamic fatigue test, which is relatively easy to perform in various environmental conditions, provides sufficient information to predict the static fatigue of optical fiber.
