Abstract
Recent advances in the research of semiconductor distributed feedback (DFB) lasers have empirically verified the threshold degeneracy of two longitudinal modes pointed out by Kogelnik and Shank; removing the degeneracy to accomplish a complete single-mode operation has become one of the main interests. Several methods have been studied both theoretically and experimentally, including those making use of an antisymmetric step of the coupling coefficient,1,2 a symmetric variation in the grating period,3 and a phaseadjusting region inside the cavity.2,4 Another method uses a stripe-width modulation,5 which is believed to be simple and versatile compared with the others. The purpose of this work is to achieve a complete single-longitudinal-mode operation in DFB lasers by the modulated stripe-width (MSW) structure, thus confirming experimentally the validity of the scheme.
