Abstract
To introduce the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technique into fiber-optic transmission systems, a low-cost high-performance multi/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX) is indispensable. A guided-wave MUX is attractive because of its potential for cost reduction and ease of assembly. We have already confirmed the feasibility of the two-channel guided-wave MUX1 by utilizing gradient-index ion exchange multimode waveguides.2 In the MUX, based on an idea by Kawachi et al.,3 interference filters are inserted into straight waveguides, the reflected light is guided to branching waveguides, and the transmitted light is allowed to reenter the straight waveguides.
