Abstract
With widespread implementation of lightwave systems using silica-based fibers, long-term aging studies are critical for assuring reliable performance of the transmission media over the design lifetime.1 Three aging effects are of primary concern: static fatigue degradation of initial strength which can lead to delayed failure; increases in attenuation due to radiation-induced absorption; and loss increases due to Interaction with hydrogen.
