Abstract
Sodium and potassium contained in natural silica tubes1 have been found to diffuse into the central part of the fiber during the drawing process, and their relationship with the hydrogen-induced loss increase in the IR wavelength region has been clarified. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements have been used to confirm the existence and distribution of such contamination in different stages.
