Abstract
Optical fiber technology is one of the technologies that will provide us with a means of creating true broadband networks, networks which support broadband services for residential and business subscribers. For large scale public networks, where many subscribers are offered bandwidths orders of magnitude larger than they have today, a new generation of switching systems will be required. These systems will have an aggregate data throughput orders of magnitude larger than today's systems are capable of. Recent progress in broadband communications switching research is reviewed.
