Abstract
The SONET optical network specification is a collection of different standards packaged into one group. It contains the optical, line format, multiplexing, synchronization, performance, maintenance, and network specifications. This tutorial addresses these standards, some important system concepts, and application of SONET to the network. The status of these standards, and the additions planned for the upcoming Phase 2 SONET release are discussed.
